Natural Ayurvedic Healing in Los Angleles

Kailas and Cedar Miller of West Ayurveda Center in Los Angeles

Kailas and Cedar Miller at West Ayurveda Center in Los Angeles.

I co-founded West Ayurveda Center in Santa Monica with Los Angeles physician Dr. Rachel West, DO, and Cedar Miller, to provide powerful customized Panchakarma therapy.

Our Panchakarma protocol goes beyond traditional methods used in India - because as Westerners, we understand the need to fully engage the emotions to support an individual in complete healing transformation.

You are More than "Three Doshas"

Ayurvedic wisdom says that each of us is "gunatita" - meaning that while we all dwell in a physical body operating via the "Dosha Theory" - each of us is in fact, totally transcendent of the Doshas.

That is why we support the deepest layers of a person - to heal from the center. Healing from the spiritual center is in fact the most ancient form of Ayurveda, but has been lost in India over time, and due to the number of charlatans that have used Ayurveda as a way to make a living, without actualy carrying on the true work of healing humanity.

Why NOT to do Panchakarma - in India

Indian clinics have begun to seek clients from the United States. But most Indian Ayurvedic clinics are not prepared to handle the complex healing needs of Westerners.

Indian clinics do not treat the Mind/Body relationship or the emotions, nor do they prepare clients to adopt an Ayurvedic lifestyle that is practical in the United States.

So doing Panchakarma in India to "save money" is not a prudent investment in your health. I have been told by many people who have gone to India for Panchakarma that our Panchakarma treatment is much more thorough than the treatments they found in India.

OK - Here We Go:
Beyond Other Panchakarma Clinics
...

Compare our Panchakarma Protocol to other clinics and see for yourself how your investment in time, energy, and expense is maximized. Invest wisely in your healing.

1. First Ayurvedic Consultation

This Panchakarma therapy starts with an in-depth Ayurvedic Consultation that looks beyond the Three Doshas - and into your health over your entire life - to discover the patterns at the source of your health issues, based on the hidden relationship between your karma and your bio-energy.

Did you know that often chronic patterns of ill-health reveal predispositions toward Dosha imbalances - due to Ancestral Karma - which once addressed - can be integrated and cleared?

Clearing these ties to the health and emotions of your ancestors and parents frees you from the often negative effects of your lineage on your health. In Western medicine this is typified by DNA, but in Ayurveda it is looked at through the lens of karma.

In an Ayurvedic Consultation I next look at the Organ Level bio-energy: how much have you used your energy - from the perspective of your organs -and what they require in order to help your body not only heal, but to completely regenerate.

We also test the map of your birthchart using the techqniques of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) and determine which influences on your health are revealed by the effects of the planets and stars. There is an entire branch of Jyotish dealing with medical astrology.

I then perform an Ayurvedic Pulse Reading - which tests the Three Doshas, the integration of masculine and feminine energy in your body, and I read the awareness of your bio-energy through your pulses.

I perform Craniosacral Testing to determine how your right and left side of your body are balanced because often people have health problems affecting one side of the body more than the other; or have injuries and scar tissue that block healing, and restrictions in bio-energy that require clearing in order for the body to heal itself.

So this detailed Ayurvedic Consultation goes farther than anyone else does - and gives us comprehensive data from which to create the Panchakarma Treatment Plan customized just for you.

2. Herbal Teas and Essential Oil Preparation

The first step of the treatment plan is to prepare the herbal medicines in the form of purifying and energizing herb teas that you take every day during Panchakarma. These teas detox and tonify each of the main systems of the body including digestive system, liver/gallbladder, circulatory system (and kidneys), respiratory system, reproductive system, and your core bio-energy.

In addition to herb teas, we blend therapeutic-grade essential oils for your steam and massage oils and we prepare specialized herbal capsules to support your healing.

3. Swedhana - Ayurvedic Steam Detox

Ayurveda teaches that our first step in detoxification is to "clear the channels".

So the ancient therapy called "Swedhana", where we get the verb to sweat from, quickly moves fluids to the surface of your body - to open and detoxify the lymphatic system, circulatory system, deep organs, and to start loosening fats and toxins.

We utilize proprietary, time-tested essential oil blends that combine the best of Indian botanical medicine with the herbs, trees and flowers found in the West.

4. Shirodhara - Nervous System Integration

Shirodhara is an ancient therapay which uses a warm stream of sesame oil which is poured continuously on your forehead.

Shirohdara can either revitalize the energy of the brain and nervous system - or it can bring great calm to the mind and body, depending on how the oil is applied. This therapy also rejuvenates the face and hair, decreasing wrinkles and rejuvenates the scalp, promoting youthfulness.

5. Ayurvedic Colon Detox

The second "channel" that is cleansed and detoxified is your large intestine. We use a special blend of Ayurvedic herbs in water, administered through the Colema enema system.

These colon cleansing herbs support the healthy maintenance of cellular tissue and the mucosal lining within the colon. What's more, the Colema process reinvigorates your natural muscular peristalsis - and brings your digestive system back to life.

As you cleanse your colon, massaging your abdomen, you will get to know how your digestive system works and open a new chapter in your ability to heal and maintain your health.

6. Herbal Full Body Wraps

Ayurvedic Herbal Body Wraps provide additional detoxification and prepare you for Pratyahara - the process of turning within to heal.

We prepare a strong herbal decoction to cleanse your peripheral circulatory and lymphatic systems, promotes cellular regeneration and stimulate your bio-energy. This decoction soaks into extra-wide cotton wraps placed around you from head to toe.

After being wrapped in warm herbal extracts you are covered in blankets and cocooned - in a warm herbal "womb" - in which you can begin to meditate on your healing process, set your intentions, and integrate the insightes and wisdom you receive during Panchakarma.

7. Abhyanga - Tandem Ayurvedic Massage

It's said that "the Fascial System is where East meets West" because this layered "web" of tissue runs through your entire body, has no beginning or end, and its continuity resembles the flow of energy we normally think of as the system of Marma Points in Ayurveda, or the Acupuncture Meridians of Chinese Medicine.

The tandem massage called "Abhyanga" releases restrictions, integrates the entire body, balances energy and Prana (life-force-breath), integrates emotional and cellular memory, and invites your body to consciously connect to mother nature.

It is a profoundly healing bodywork technique that is performed by two Ayurvedic massage therapists working synchronously.

8. Udvartana - Massage with Healing Aromatics

An additional treatment to open the channels and enliven your nervous system is Udvartana, a supplemental treatment for Abhyanga and Marma Massage in which dried aromatic flowers of rose, chamomile, and lavender are ground with neem leaves, eucalyptus, and other aromatic herbs to form an exfoliating and intensely relaxing, yet energizing blend, that is massaged into your entire body. This brings the body to life in a beautiful way.

9. Herbal Liver Detox

Our Organ Therapy begins with detoxification of the liver. We use a proprietary time-tested formula of herbs and fresh organic fruits to flush your liver and detoxify the tissue.

The liver not only produces bile and cleans the blood, but relates with numerous hormonal systems. In one introduction to liver science - the medical researcher stated that - there are over a billion functions of the liver that Western medicine knows nothing about yet!

So in Abhyanga, we focus on detoxing the cellular memory of Fascia, but in Organ Therapy we detoxify the cellular memory of each organ and return the specific "Organ Qi" or organ energy to its maximum potency so you can heal.

10. Herbal Gallbladder Detox

The gallbladder is considered a master switchboard operator which can digest the energy of choices and directions.

So flushing the gallbladder can be an important additional treatment in your customized Panchakarma protocol. We determine this during the Ayurvedic Consultation based on whether you have an excess of Kapha Dosha, an inability to digest feelings, or an inability to make decisions.

11. Lepa - Herbal Kidney Detox

Lepa is another detoxification and regeneration method used during the Abhyanga massage. It supports the energy of the kidneys. This crucial energy is considered to have an impact on longevity as well as regulating the circulatory system, the hormonal system, your perceptions of anxiety or gentleness, and the spiritual balance of your bio-energy.

12. Nasya - Healing Nasal Passages and Sinuses

Ayurveda states that the shortest route to the brain is through the nose. The nose is also the gateway to the lungs, which are the seat of Kapha Dosha, and the emotional forces of courage and grief. The lungs are also the seat of the energy of the Immune System.

13. Steam Inhalation - Clearing the Lungs

To cleanse and revitalize the lungs and sinuses, we use an herbal steam inhalation that combines custom blended essential oils mixed into steaming-hot filtered water.

This powerful treatment stimulatees and energizes the deepest parts of your lungs, and "reboots" your Prana.

14. Karna Puran - Healing the Auditory Canals and Temporal Bones

The ear and auditory canals are important points of healing and regeneration - they are centeral to the temporal bones of the cranium, the cranial meninges, important Marma Therapy ponts, nerves, Gallbladder Meridian points, and reflex points in the ear which bring energy to all the organs.

Warm herbally medicated oil is poured into the ear canals with droppers and massaged into the ear and surrounding tissue to cleanse and rejuvenates the entire ear, release the energy of the meridians and marma points, and to release the temporal bone and temporomandibular jont (TMJ) to de-stress your jaws, head, and neck.

15. Netra Basti - Healing the Nervous System via the Eyes

The eyes are the gateway to the areas of the nervous system in which intense emotions such as trauma or spiritual darshan are experienced.

The technique of Netra Basti utilizes the Dosha balancing, cleansing, and healing properties of ghee to lubricate the tissue of the eye and orbit, creating a cooling and calming effect in the nervous system.

16. Chakra Anointment - a Sacred Initiation

In the most ancient form of Ayurveda was developed in the jungle, long before Ayurveda had its official schools. Shamans and Yogis of the Indian jungles used the Chakra System to heal the body.

The Chakra System is one of the most personal and sensitive spiritual energy systems of the body, and great care has to be exercised when interacting with it. Not just anyone who "clears chakras" for a living can do this type of healing work which requires total dedication for years to even begin to comprehend.

This optional feature of our Panchakarma protocol is chosen only if you Ayurvedic Consultation indicates it. I specifically use the Chakra verses from the Lalita Sahasranama (1000 Names of the Divine Mother) for the anointment, and invoke divine Kundalini energy by bringing the Five Elements into alignment. This has been handed down to me by my Guru.

17. Ayurvedic Diet - Feed Your Soul

Our Panchakarma features an Ayurvedic lunch each day, prepared from organic ingredients and imbued during cooking with mantras and prayer. We prepare our cuisine with respect to any dietary needs and sensitivities, such as gluten free, dairy free or other needs.

This is pure food cooked with pure intention to heal your body.

18. Lifestyle Change Consultation

Included in the final day of Panchakarma is a Closing Consultation which summarizes everything you have learned or is recoomended for you to integrate into your lifestyle. We offer ongoing Ayurvedic Coaching to ensure that you have full support and can take everything that you have experienced into your daily life!
